The weather bureau has announced that the rains, which have been persistent over the last 1 week in Kerala and the mountain range areas of Tamil Nadu, will abate gradually to a great extent.

The southwest monsoon rainy season has been intensively active over the last 2 months and there have been rains throughout the country. Usually, during this period, floods will occur only in Northern India. However, during this year, it had rained excessively in the state of Kerala causing unprecedented floods.

Further, it had rained heavily in the Western Ghat mountain range adjacent areas in Tamil Nadu as well and all the water catchment areas have become full.

As it rained excessively in the state of Karnataka as well, the excess water had been opened and drained out thus rendering the delta areas of the river Cauvery in floods.

In this situation, the incessant rain over the last 1 week so far has shown signs of abating and has reduced. The weather bureau has estimated that this will reduce further.

At the same time, it has been announced that there are prospects of heavy rains today as well (Saturday, 18th August) in the hilly areas and the districts of Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Dindigul, and Tirunelveli.

Meanwhile, there are indications that a new low-pressure zone is about to form in the northeast Bay of Bengal.

The Chennai Metro City will be cloudy. The weather bureau has estimated that there are prospects of rain in the city during the evening or the night sessions.
