TTD obtains licence for preparation of Laddus

TTD (Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam Board) has obtained the licence for the production of the famous laddus which are the sacred offerings from the hugely popular Tirupathi temple.
The offering of Laddus had started around 300 years ago for the devotees visiting the Lord Venkateswara temple for a Darshan. The British, who were ruling Madra (Chennai at that time), brought the laddus up for sales in the year 1803 when it was sold in loos form – called ‘boondhi’.
From the year 1940, the shape was formed into laddus and sold. Till the year 1984, the laddus were prepared using wood as the main fuel. The fuel was changed to gas from 1984.
Laddus became so hugely popular such that once the word Tirupathi is mentioned, people recall laddus – as such, a petition was made that TTD should obtain a licence for this preparation from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Under the RTI (Right to Information), Narasimhamurthy from Hassoor (Karnataka) raised a query regarding this issue to ISI.
As per the information from the officer at FSSAI Chennai, a licence has been given to TTD authorities for preparing laddus using around 40 metric ton worth of ingredients for preparing Laddus everyday in the Tirupathi temple till 6th August 2019.
Similarly, the licence has been given to prepare Vadai, Jalebi, and appam using 20 tons of ingredients till 2nd August 2018.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has informed that the licence is in the format where it can be renewed every year.
