Excessive fructose causes metabolic diseases

Posted on: 03/Oct/2016 2:53:11 PM
A recent study has found that consuming overmuch sugar, especially sugar fructose (those present in soda) is largely associated with increasing metabolic disease.

Researchers also claim that the volume of sugar consumed in general is not to be blamed for this epidemic. Others state that ingesting excessive levels of sugar causes diabetes.

Mark Herman, Assistant Professor of Duke University said that the controversy about sugar being the reason for diabetes is still prevalent. He also added that their study has details about the mechanism by which excessive fructose can cause problems.

Our body contains insulin hormone to keep blood glucose under control after eating. Among the major manifestations of diabetes is insulin resistance where the metabolic tissues resist responding to insulin.

Unlike the common belief, insulin resistance is not something that gets built in liver, rather the excessive sugar content gives rise to molecular factor called carbohydrate responsive element binding protein, ChREBP. This in turn gives rise to fatty liver as well as excessive glucose production. To note, ChREBP is a protein found in many organisms including mice, humans and various other mammals.

It is found that regardless of the insulin level secreted in pancreas, the process initiated by ChREBP cannot be overridden. These results in blood sugar and raise in insulin level that will eventually lead to insulin resistance in our body.
