Rain in southern Tamil Nadu, may persist today

Posted on: 30/Mar/2016 11:44:57 AM
Rain in southern Tamil Nadu gave respite to people from the searing heat. Tuticorin recorded 30 mm of rain on Tuesday. Weather experts say that rainfall may continue on Wednesday but will not persist longer. On Tuesday, Tondi in Ramanathapuram district recorded 6.4 mm of rain. Kanyakumari, Madurai, Sivagangai and Coonoor also received brief spells of rain on Monday and Tuesday.

A senior official from the Regional Meteorological Centre said, A weak trough over the Gulf of Mannar in the Indian Ocean aided the rain that was also brought on due to heat build-up. The spell of rain is expected to last another day as it moves westwards. Kanyakumari and parts of Kerala are likely to get rainfall on Wednesday. Easterly winds are prevailing in the state. When the temperature rises and there is enough moisture, an external factor like the weak trough can trigger rainfall in summer.
