53 percent increased rain showers this year, Ramanan

The rain showers received this year is 53 percent higher than earlier years, say Ramanan, the director of Cyclone warning center in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
 
Addressing the presspersons today, Ramanan said Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry receive northeast monsoon rain during the months October, November and December. In general, the rain fall of 44 cm will be received here. During this year, 68 cm rainfall is received. This is comparatively 53 percent higher than the amount received in general.
 
During 2013, there was just 33 percent of rainfall. Though there was heavy showers in October 2014, there was no rain in November and December. During this year, there was heavy rain showers similar to 2005.
 
In Kanchipuram, 183 percent rainfall is the maximum recorded this year and stands as first. This district will receive an average of 65 percent rainfall every year. However, now, there was 181.5 cm rainfall.
 
There was 146 cm rainfall in Thiruvallur district which will in general receive just 59 cm rainfall. While Chennai will generally receive 79 percent rain, the city has received 160 cm this time. This is 104 percent higher than usual rainfall amount.
 
If there is no rain shower in any part of Tamil Nadu in the following four or five days, it can be assumed as the conclusion of northeast monsoon for this year, Ramanan pointed. El Nino is also a major reason for heavy showers in coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, he recollects.
