Posted on: 07/Apr/2014 3:43:14 PM

The number of diabetics are increasing day-by-day in India especially South India, and more particularly, in Tamil Nadu.

Even though steps for increasing awareness on diabetes has been taken up by both the central and state government, diabetes is on the rise due to failure in individual control and lack of training. Diabetes is hereditary and is passed even when the infant is in the womb from its mother through the hereditary genes.

Diabetes generally surfaces in the age between the ages of 20 to 30 due to environmental and other circumstances. Human has the control to change these conditions. Diabetes can be prevented by a good lifestyle and good ambiance. Diabetes has a long history just like the human evolution.

Diabetes has been mentioned in the famous Egyptian civilization during 1500 B.C. Ancient India’s medical expert, Sasrut has mentioned about diabetes in his literary work, known as ‘Madhumegham’. He has noted that diabetes is more prevalent among lazy, people, overweight people and people who eat more quantities.

What is diabetes?

The sugar known as glucose provides us energy. It enables the blood to carry all nutrients taken through food to all the cells in different organs. However, this glucose cannot be directly absorbed by some parts. A hormone, known as insulin, is required for this purpose.

Insulin converts this glucose into sugar that could be absorbed for the functioning of the organs. Insulin is produced by the organ pancreas by the beta cells. When insulin production is normal, the body does not have any problems.

The normal sugar level in blood is maintained at 60 to 120 milligrams. If there is a shortage in the production of insulin, the sugar in the blood does not get converted and disturbs the function of the organs. The sugar level in the blood rises. When it exceeds a limit, the excess sugar has to be removed. In order to reduce the sugar level in the blood, the kidney releases the excess sugar through urine. When this situation continues, the cells stop operating. This leads to diabetic condition when the person feels tired and thirsty.
