Look at a public gathering and you’ll notice almost everyone having their mobile phone in hand most of which are smartphones. Smartphone has got its own importance in our day to day life. As they are helpful in multitudinous aspects, they’re almost considered indispensable in the recent years. We in fact rely on it and cannot survive without having one in hand.

Though it imparts an element of confidence to make stylish touches on the gadget’s display screen, you should definitely know how far it is affecting your eyes! Yes, it is. Smartphones have a huge impact on your eye’s health.

Speaking to Dr Keiki Mahta, Ophthalmic surgeon, he says the important problem with a smartphone is the distance at which we use it. We’ll be urged to use it very close to eyes. This will eventually result in pain in eyes, blurred vision, dryness in eye, reduces your blinking count and you’ll develop headache, the doctor said.

Those wearing spectacles or contact lenses are prone to more problems compared to others who don’t were any. This is because, such individuals will have to manage either way – optical aids as well as strain created by smartphone.

Below are some of the reasons associated with smartphones that gives rise to strain in eyes:

·         As the font sizes of smarphone texts are small in size, it contributes to straining in eyes.

·       Prolonged use of smartphone for browsing through the internet is yet another reason that keeps you focused on the phone’s display.

·         Using phone during travel

“Youngsters tend to use the phone very close to eyes – of the distance range between 10 and 12 inches. When routinely used this way, it will lead to myopia in most cases,” says an ophthalmologist.

Practice these and keep your eyes protected:

·         Reduce the total time you spend with the smartphone

·         Get a phone with larger screen size as it will help reduce the level of strain in eyes

·         Maintain significant distance  between your eye and phone when on use

·         Blink more often as it will keep your eyes hydrated

·         Practice to read the fonts in black with a white background

·         Increase the font size of texts you read

These are some of the practices that can help you refrained from eye strains and possible troubles in the god-gifted vision.
