In the city of Chennai, there are about 400 Amma canteens that provide foods at subsidized rates.  The news that has now come out is that the newly elected DMK party might soon take a decision to change the name of these Amma canteens. It is now said that Amma canteens might be renamed as Anna canteens.

It has been brought out by senior GCC officials that they would start removing the white tape from the name boards. Point is that 400 Amma canteens have been covered by a white tape and despite the election code of conduct being no longer in place. The officials have made it clear that the scheme would continue.

Mr. T.K.S. Elangovan, DMK spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP spoke about how an improvised form of canteens has been promised in the election manifesto. He added that the canteens could have just one name and it would be the name of the DMK founder and former CM of TN Mr C.N. Annadurai.

The DMK party has also promised to start 500 Kalaignar canteens similar to Amma canteens that would provide food at subsidised cost to poor and under-privileged people. It was in 2013 Amma canteens were first started and now there are 407 such canteens in Chennai.

These Amma canteens are funded totally by GCC and the cost of idli here is just Rs 1, variety rice is sold for Rs 3 a plate and chapati and dal at Rs 3 per plate.

According to Mr. Jothi Sivagnanam, professor, HOD, Economics, MU, it has been a Dravidian tradition to strengthen existing schemes started by political opponents. Few examples are marriage assistance, PDS rice and old age pension etc. He later spoke about how the quality of the foods must be improved by the new government and how new canteens must be started in more prominent places.
