There are several issues to be resolved before the recommencement of the colleges and universities which were closed due to the outbreak of the raging coronavirus pandemic as a preventive measure since March for a period of more than 8 months.

The Chief |Minister of Tamil Nadu, E. Palaniswamy, has informed that the colleges and universities are to reopen on 7th |December while the classes will be exclusive for the students of the final year graduate course.

However, presently, several academic institutions have been engaged as Isolation Centres for the COVID-19 patients and the task of cleaning them again and handing over the premises back to the college authorities are in progress.

The tasks of the cleaning of the college/university complexes, spraying with disinfectants and handing over the premises to the college/university authorities are being expedited. At present, with barely a week left for the reopening of the colleges, the status is that in the Chennai Metro City alone, 50 colleges are yet to be handed over to the authorities!

As per the order released by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palaniswamy on Monday (30th November), it had been mentioned that the classes for the graduate final year students of Arts, Science, Engineering, Technology, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Veterinary Science will be reopened on 7th December while they have to adhere strictly to the guidelines given as preventive measures against the spread of the raging coronavirus pandemic. |The associated hostels will also be opened for the students facility.

In this scenario, several colleges are still being used as lodges for Corona p patients! They are yet to be handed over to the college authorities. As the number of incoming corona patients has been showing a marked reduction in the recent times, it is learnt that some college authorities have already appealed to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to clean the premises and hand over.

As at present, (on Monday, 30th November|), the Anna University premises complex remained uncleaned and without the spraying of the disinfectants! However, as per the College |Administration authorities, the premises will be cleaned and sprayed with disinfectants before the reopening.

After the order for reopening of colleges was released, no new corona patients are being admitted in the colleges converted into corona treatment centres|!

Several government colleges had handed over their hostels to the state government to use them as corona centres. However, it is learnt that several hostels are remaining uncleaned.

As such, without the premises being not cleaned, it is also learnt that the students may be apprehensive to enter the colleges.

Apart from all above-mentioned, most of the college students depend on suburban trains for transport to attend college|! As of now, the passenger suburban trains are yet to resume operations for all passengers in the Chennai Metro City, the college students may be constrained to travel by bus! |As such, there may several students who may not have the bus facility and hence not able to attend college.

As mentioned above, it is imperative that resumption of suburban train services and bus services for all passengers must be carried out before the reopening of colleges!

Further, even though it must be appreciated that colleges being reopened for the final year students, it may not be immediately possible to reopen the colleges/universities for the students of other categories! The private college administrations inform that social distancing may be kept ONLY if 25% of the students are allowed!
