For those science and humanities faculty members who have joined the engineering colleges in TN on or before 1st of March 2019, here comes an important piece of news!!

It was announced by Anna University or AU on Saturday that NET/SLET/PHD was not compulsory for the above said faculty members of the engineering colleges.

It must be recalled that last year AU grabbed many eyeballs when it announced that the faculty members of science and humanities departments in the engineering colleges across TN should have a mandatory NET/SLET/PHD. Those existing faculty members without these qualifications got affected by this. Truth is that the engineering colleges in TN sought the relaxation stating that they had appointed the faculty members of sciences and humanities as per the norms.

The AU centre for affiliation of institutions has issued a circular clarifying the norms for the science and humanities faculty members. This was done ahead of the inspection of the engineering colleges for 2023-24 academic year.

As per the circular from AU, it was clear that those incumbent science and humanities faculty members who do not have NET/SLET/PHD who have joined on or before 1st March 2019 may be permitted to continue in the same colleges. The circular also revealed that for promotions or for the movement to other affiliated colleges under the same university on or after 1st March 2019 the faculty members need not satisfy the requirement. It was clear that those who have joined any institution for the first time on or after 1st March 2019 must satisfy the requirement of NET/SLET/PHD.

According to an official from AU, enforcement of new norms of AICTE was carried out last year. He added that  many colleges claimed that the faculty members with MPhil degrees were appointed as per the earlier norms. He concluded that the norms have been revised exempting the faculty members who have joined before the new norms were introduced.
