Many among the public believe that Remedesivir (the anti -viral injection) could save the lives of their family members and relatives etc from Covid-19 infection. Many private hospitals in Chennai now take advantage of this situation and charge huge amounts. The demand for the beds has become more now. This was brought out by a Vellore based senior health department official.

In Vellore also, there is now a serious shortage of medicines and this is similar to that in other parts of TN and India. For nearly a fortnight, they have been waiting for the medicine and this was according to a leading pharma dealer. He added that the 2000 vials that were ordered a fortnight back havent yet come. Inspite of several promises by the agents, the medicine has not yet come even after 15 days.

Private players have been making use of the pandemic situation and they are wontedly creating a demand so that they would be able to sell the medicine at unimaginable rates. This was pointed out by the senior officer belonging to the health department. In the government hospitals, the vial of medicine costs Rs 900 but many private hospitals demand more money.

The important point here is that the patients do not understand that the medicine would be needed by everyone but the clamour for the drug has led to huge demand for the beds at the private hospitals. If the daily Covid-19 positive cases are between 500 and 600 then the situation would be managed easily and anything more than that would create huge issues.
