Increase in the green space in Chennai now

Posted on: 20/Oct/2020 9:21:29 AM
Miyawaki forest was set up in Madambakkam in Chennai yesterday and this attracted the attention of many. In the area spread across 33 acres in Madambakkam, GCC officials have planted around 500 native saplings. This has increased the green space in Chennai now.

It must be recalled that in 1946 a person named Alagappa Chettiyar donated his lands in Madambakkam to the Chennai Corporation. A hospital for treating leprosy patients was constructed on one part of the land and it was inaugurated by former CM of TN Dr. J. Jayalalitha and other land was empty. This was brought out by an official of GCC.

Information gathered is that the encroachers began occupying the land and this led to GCC taking call to plant 10000 trees for an amount of Rs 40 lakhs.

Various trees planted included mango, jackfruit, fig, gooseberry, fig, pomegranate and guava. It is said that scrubs and creepers would also be planted here for beautification.

The official belonging to GCC spoke about the reason for choosing native species. He said that the native species would grow in a self -sufficient way. In the past Chennai Corporation played its role in setting up Miyawaki forest in places like Kotturpuram and in Valasaravakkam is well known to us.
