Over 400 buildings and shops constructed unauthorised near the Velachery Railway Station in the lands owned by the Railways were demolished on Tuesday (18th June) under heavy police protection.

Velachery Railway Station is located under the jurisdiction of the Chennai Metro City Corporation in the Adyar Zone.

The Railways own lands of 4 acres area near this railway station. Some private agencies occupied this area in an unauthorised way and constructed shops and buildings.

The Railway administration sent notice 18 years ago to the unauthorised occupants to vacate the place. However, they refused to vacate.

The case related came up for enquiry in the Chennai High Court. After the enquiry, Chennai High Court ordered to vacate the unauthorised constructions.

The local residents appealed against this to the Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court also concurred with the Chennai High Court confirming the order to vacate the unauthorised occupation of the land and the constructions.

Subsequently, on Tuesday, 18th June, the personnel from the Revenue and the Railways Department, with the help of  the Chennai Metro City Corporation workers, started demolishing the unauthorised constructions.

However, the traders and the local residents protested this. So, more than 500 police staff was deployed for safety and security. With this, more than 400 constructions houses and shops were demolished with the help of Poklane equipment.
