There are 2 new food plazas at Chennai Central functional from today. There is a new unit launched at the Wall Tax Road entrance intersecting platforms 1 and 2. Also the minor plaza is also renovated and started operations after 2 years of shutdown period.

That said, it will be possible for the passengers to avail food at market rates. Until now, Central has been selling food sourced from railway canteens. The food if often not preferred by the passengers.

For the past 2.5 years, there has been no food plaza at all. However, according to senior railway officials notice, there will be more number of these plazas in the following years. In fact, tenders for setting up these food plazas are also confirmed at the end of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

With over 3 lakh people as its daily footfall back in 2015, there was a main food plaza set up at new concourse, and opposite to this, there was a smaller one. Here, there were a number of different brands offering food including south Indian items, fast food, and so on.

The delay in setting up the main food plaza was due to the tug of water between southern railways and IRCTC.

August 2016 marked the end of contract to function smaller food plaza. However, because of disagreements between IRCTC and southern railways, there was no progress in setting up new food plazas which just got sorted out recently.

Sooner, close to book stall on new concourse, there will be one more food plaza. Stalls by 2 more brands are also to be set up, say senior railway officials. And the next one will be set up close to Moore Market Complex (the suburban terminal).
