A new cyclone Puravi is to form today! Cyclone warning to southern districts!

The low-pressure zone which formed over Sri Lanka will intensify and transform into a cyclone today (Tuesday, 1st December). Due to this, there are prospects for heavy rain in the delta districts. It is also warned that there are prospects for very heavy rains tomorrow (Wednesday, 2nd December) in the southern districts.

In a notification released by the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, it is mentioned:

The low-pressure zone which formed over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, 29th November transformed into a depression zone yesterday (Monday, 1st December) and intensified further.

This has stabilized over the central part of the South Bay of Bengal located at a distance of 975 km southwest of Karaikkal. This is set to intensify further and transform into a cyclone and drift towards northwest and cross Sri Lanka tomorrow evening (Wednesday, 2nd December) and drift towards |Kanyakumari Ocean section. |Due to this, there are prospects for heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagappattinam, Pudhukkottai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Kanyakumari.

Today (1st December): There are prospects for mild to medium rain in the other districts and Puducherry and Karaikkal.

Tomorrow (2nd December): There are prospects for very heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Thenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Kanyakumari. There are prospects for very heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Pudhukkottai, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagappattinam, and Karaikkal. There are prospects for heavy rains in the districts of  Thiruvallur and |Kanchipuram.

There are prospects for high-speed winds blowing at up to 65 kmph in the southern districts and the districts of Sivagangai and Virudhunagar.

3rd December: There are prospects for very heavy rains in the districts of Thenkasi, Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Kanyakumari. There are prospects for very heavy rains in the districts of Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram and prospects for mild rain in the coastal districts and |Puducherry.

There are prospects of high-speed winds blowing at 75 kmph in the southern coastal districts and the districts of Sivagangai and Virudhunagar.

4th December: There are prospects for widespread mild rains throughout the state.

As the depression zone transforms into a cyclone, it has been named ‘purerevi’. This name has been given from the Maldives.
