For the first time, Rs 50 crores plus collected as property tax on a single day in Chennai!!

For the very first time, the property tax collection in Chennai touched Rs 50 crores on a single day and this has caught the attention of many. On 31st March 2023, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation collected Rs 50 crores as property tax collection.

An amount of Rs 11.4 cr was collected as property tax amount on Thursday. The collection was Rs 52.32 crores and this was as per the data compiled at 8pm in the evening yesterday. It must be noted that 31st March was the last day to pay property taxes without any fine or penalty.  In the normal scenario, the property tax collection on a single day would be around Rs 5 crores only.

The officers have pointed out that as the property tax collection went above Rs 50 cr on a single day yesterday the total collection would be more than Rs 1500 crores during the period from 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2023.

On 31st March, Royapuram zone registered property tax collection of Rs 10 crores. This zone has got the highest number of commercial properties is known.

Other zones like Teynampet, Adyar, Kodambakkam, Alandur, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Sholinganallur, Perungudi , Valsarawakkam etc collected Rs 9.48 cr, Rs. 4.36 cr, Rs 4.92 cr, Rs 3.47 cr, Rs 3.29 cr, Rs 3.17 cr, Rs 2.55 cr, Rs 2.28 crand Rs 2.27 cr respectively. Yesterday, zones in north Chennai such as Manali, Tondiarpet and Madhavaram etc collected less than Rs 1 crore. More than Rs 1 cr was collected from zones like Thiruvottriyur and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar.

Usually, every day there would be a daily average of 6000 bills only but yesterday there were atleast 15000 bills. On Friday, the professional tax collection touched Rs 33.64 crores. An amount of Rs 15.66 cr was collected as professional tax from Teynampet zone and that was the highest for any zone.
