Posted on: 08/Mar/2019 10:24:59 AM
If we travel around 80 kms south of Chennai city we would reach a place called Mamandur. This place is now making huge noises for the reason that second airport might come up here.

As per the developer, Mr. Gigi George, AAI or Airport Authority of India has cleared the site after inspection. The point is final approval from the government is yet to come and once it comes then we might see Chennai getting its second airport in Mamandur. The location is ideal for a Greenfield airport as it is sandwiched between GST Road and a railway line. In phase-1 the proposed complex would be 1.4 lakh sq m and in phase-2 the complex would be of 1.275 lakh square metre. Totally there would be 5.5 lakh sqm and the place would have hotels, convention centre and township  and there would be 2 runways.

Mr George who is a realtor and partner in KGS Developers expressed his thoughts about this 2nd airport. He spoke about how the airport would come up at 3500 acres of land and an amount of Rs 4500 crores would be invested on this. He was happy regarding the AAI clearing the site and informing the state government. Mr. George then assured that if everything goes according to the plans then by 2022-23 first phase of the airport would be ready to handle 20 million passengers.

To execute the project, a Special Purpose Vehicle, Taking Off To The Future Private Ltd, has been formed. It was pointed out by Mr. George that for the first investment of amount of 100 million dollars their company had signed a deal with a Middle-East based investor. It must be noted that this Middle East based investor has interests in airports assets in Kerala and he wanted to set up a Greenfield airport in Kerala. Cancellation of this project was done by the Kerala government due to environmental problems. An official belonging to AAI was not clear about the clearance from the headquarters or from the civil aviation ministry regarding Mamandur land parcel. Mr. George finally explained about how by the year 2022 the airport in Meenambakkam would reach saturation.
