The demand for studying post graduation in medicine after completing MBBS has been on the rise in the recent times. Many students after finishing MBBS aspire to do post graduation but do not succeed in getting a PG medical seat due to less number of post graduate seats available.

The important information is Medical Council of Indias or MCI Board of Governors sanctioned conversion of 384 post graduate diploma medical seats into degree seats and it would be filled in the 2019-20 academic year. It must be taken into account that the Board of Governors had given approval for a total of 124 additional post graduate degree seats.

In 2018-19, the number of PG medical seats present was 1250 and this number has now risen to 1748 in the year 2019-20. By this Tamil Nadu has now become the state with the highest number of post graduate medical seats in the government medical colleges in India. It must be mentioned that the state of TN surrendered the diploma seats to the MCI and it was waiting for the order for the conversion of PG diploma seats to degree seats.

The conversion sanction order was received on Thursday and this was confirmed by Dr. Edwin Joe, the director of medical education or DME. He expressed his happiness and spoke about how the 384 PG diploma seats that were present in Madras Medical College, Stanley Medical College, Kilpauk Medical College, Madurai Medical College, Thanjavur Medical College and Coimbatore Medical College have been converted to PG degree medical seats now. Dr. Edwin Joe then threw light on how for 2019-20, a total additional of 124 PG medical seats have been sanctioned by the Board of Governors.

The officials pointed out that in 2018-19 the state of TN had 1250 PG degree seats. Application for 124 additional seats was done and the seats were sanctioned in 2 phases. In the phase-1 as many as 56 seats were sanctioned. This had led to increase in the seats to 1362 and with the conversion of 384 PG diploma seats to PG degree seats the total number of PG seats has increased now to 1758.
