Starting from 1st of January 2019, new parents will not have the burden of applying for birth certificates as they see their little one born. Right on the day of discharge, mothers who get their babies delivered at government hospitals shall get the birth certificates handy together with the discharge summary. On the other hand, those who deliver their babies at private hospitals, the birth certificate can be downloaded in 21 days from the day of giving birth, according to a latest statement from the director of public health, Dr. K. Kolandaisamy. He is notably also the registrar of births and deaths in TN.

Birth certificates can also be downloaded from the website of civic agencies. Back from July 2009, there is no charge imposed towards providing birth certificates, as the primary health centres give them for free during discharge. The health inspectors of respective areas are appointed as the birth registrars.

This facility got spread across various maternity hospitals in the city during September 2018 this includes non-taluk hospitals, hospitals in district headquarters and taluks, medical college hospitals and also ESI hospitals, as per Supreme Court order. All the town panchayats and municipalities and corporations shall implement the same.

Close to 60 percent of the childbirth usually takes place in public hospitals. Though there were problems initially, things have got better now. If parents have decided the name for baby earlier, they can get it registered online, or they may take time till one year to add the name in the certificate. Ultimately, the process aims at simplifying measures that parents ought to take.

It is mandatory for one to get their pregnancy registered and hence special ID numbers are assigned to pregnant women using which the birth certificates will be issued. All the important details such as mother’s name, father’s name, residential address, etc. are available with the state already. The hospitals also possess with them the right date of birth and location details, says a senior official.

The online birth registration program is a huge success. It helps in better processing of the total state.

Further, mobile apps for facilitating corrections in birth certificates such as name changes or address changes are also facilitated. By the end of 2019, it will also be possible to get birth certificate hard copies at private hospitals, the officials add.
