Chennai market witnesses decrease in vegetable prices now!!

Unlike the years in the past in the month of February when the prices of the vegetables would increase, this February month has witnessed a reduction in the vegetables prices. This has caught the attention of many now. The reason for the downtrend in the veggie prices now is due to the adequate supply from the neighbouring states and from Tamil Nadu as crop cultivation began after NE monsoon.
From the last week onwards, the Koyambedu wholesale market has been receiving 500 to 520 vehicles of perishable goods. The traders are now hoping that the prices of veggies will be stable till March.
Koyambedu Wholesale Market Merchants Secretary, Mr. P. Sukumaran expressed his thoughts and spoke about how normally the first crop cultivation would start after the ending of NE monsoon due to enough water supply. Usually in February, the Koyambedu market would witness a reduction in the supply leading to the increase in the prices of the veggies. The delay in the NE monsoon has affected the production also. Unlike the previous years, this January the prices increased slightly. In the last week, the Koyambedu market received enough vegetable supply and this reduced the prices.
Now, tomatoes are being sold for Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kg, onions and brinjal are being sold for Rs 15 per kg each, potatoes for Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg. Veggies like broad beans and ladies finger are sold now at Rs 35 per kg each. The yield would get reduced as the second crop would start in March month.
