The festival on the day when the star Krithigai falls in the month of Aadi (all as per Tamil Hindu calendar), that day is celebrated as a grand festival Aadi Krithigai which is dedicated to Lord Muruga.

The epic which describes Lord Muruga, known as Skanda Purana, depicts the legend associated with Aadi Krithigai.

During this year 2019, the holy festival of Aadi Krithigai falls on Friday, 26th July.

As the festival is dedicated to Lord Muruga, naturally, Aadi Krithigai is celebrated with great gusto and verve in all the 6 special temples dedicated to Lord Muruga known prominently as Arupadai Veedu - Thirupparankundram,  Thiruchendur, Swamimalai, Palani, Thiruththanigai,  and Pazhamudhisolai.

Special Homams and Pujas are performed in these 6 famous temples on the holy Aadi Krithigai festival day.

Undertaking Kavadi yathirai (carrying Kavadi to the temple and offering the same to Lord Muruga is one of the main rituals traditionally followed on this day.
