For the state of Tamil Nadu, North East monsoon is the main rainy season. Recently the south east monsoon was responsible for heavy rainfall all over India and it caused floods and landslide is well known.

Union secretary for the ministry of earth sciences, Mr. Rajeevan expressed his thoughts and said the NE monsoon would be favourable for TN and it would bring more rains. On Tuesday, 25th September 2018, Mr. Rajeevan spoke about how the state must be fully prepared to meet the extreme weather events. He threw light on the seasonal rainfall that was low by 8 percent in this year. He then highlighted the heavy rainfall due to southeast monsoon. Mr. Rajeevan spoke about the climate changes and how the rainfall would be very high every year. He hinted about the Indian Meteorological Departments or IMD prediction of northeast monsoon and how the report would be released in the first week of the month of October. In the year 2015, Chennai city and many parts of TN were affected by floods and many people lost their lives in the floods are well known. Various institutions have come up with Chennai Flood Early Warning System or CFLOWS now. During the northeast monsoon, the warning system would be put to test on experimental basis. This was also confirmed by Mr. Rajeevan.

It is worthy to mention that C-FLOWS is a comprehensive system to predict floods and it was developed jointly by NCCR or National Centre for Coastal Research, by the IITs of Mumbai and Chennai plus by the Institute for Remote Sensing, Anna University.  He later highlighted the importance of good water management system and the flood management system.

He also stressed the importance of better dam management and spoke about how the older ways might not be a solution to the changes in the climate and heavy rains. He then explained about the importance of proper planning to release the water from the dams. Instead of waiting for the dam to reach certain level, the authorities must have knowledge regarding the amount of water flowing into the dams and they must release the water accordingly.
