North East Monsoon rains began on 28th October in Tamil Nadu. These torrential rains in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore Districts created a great havoc. There were floods everywhere. The lakes and ponds were overflowing.

At this juncture, there was downpour of rains day before yesterday afternoon. This rains flooded Chennai. All the roads were flooded. Water was filled and stagnated in the subways. Vehicles moved in snail pace. There was a great traffic disruption because of this.

The water did not recede till yesterday morning. The Anna University officials quarters were marooned in flood waters. Similarly the entrance of Raj Bhavan was flooded with water.

Water entered in the houses and shops that were in low lying areas of Velacherry`s Ram Nagar, A G S Colony, Bhubaneswar Nagar, Kalki Nagar, TANSI Nagar and Baby Nagar. The whole Velacherry looked like a lake.

Till day before yesterday, the water was up to waist level. As a precautionary measure the TNEB switched of the power to avoid any electric accidents. Because of this, there was no electric power in these houses putting the housewives in to distress. They were not able to cook without grinding machine or mixies.

Since the water did not recede in A G S Colony, Velacherry, the Chennai Corporation offered free boat rides so that the people can come out and buy whatever they needed.  A car which was parked here was washed away due to floods and was found at a distance. A post box was submerged in the water.

On the other hand, there was heavy stagnation of water in many places of 100 feet road in Koyambedu. If the stagnation does not recede, then there are chances for diseases to spread. Hence the Corporation of Chennai is taking steps to clear all the stagnations on war footed basis.
