UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has introduced a new facility to apply for new Aadhar cards if lost. A charge of Rs. 50 can be paid to receive the new Aadhar card.

In order to ensure the various central government welfare schemes do properly reach only the right users for them to avail the benefits, Aadhar cards have been distributed to the public/citizens from the year 2010. The responsibility of forming the procedures and the related rules and regulations and to issue Aadhar cards is undertaken by UIDAI.

So far, in the state of Tamil Nadu, over 7.16 Crore citizens above 5 years of age have been issued Aadhar cards out of a total of 7.74 Crores. Further, 29.22 Lakhs children below 5 years of age have been issued Aadhar cards out of a total of 55.96 Lakhs children of that age group.

The process of registration of application forms for Aadhar cards and corrections is being undertaken by the 308 government E-service centres, 1400 bank branches, and 1500 Post Offices.

Further, arrangements are being made to introduce this facility in all the BSNL Service Centres. The process of registering and issuing Aadhar cards for children under the age of 5 has been undertaken by the child welfare section under the Department of Social Welfare,

Aadhar cards which were issued years ago have all become dirty/dusty and damaged. Some citizens have lost their Aadhar cards as well. In order to solve this issue, the system of issuing Aadhar cards in the shape and form of ATM cards was taken up.

However, the QR codes entered in these cards could not be identified/read by the equipment used for family ration card issue proceeding. So, there were difficulties in using the card for full benefits. In this situation, the process of distributing plastic Aadhar cards was stopped.

Subsequently, UIDAI has again undertaken the issue of the original longer version of the Aadhar cards on a trial basis.

The concerned officials explained in this regard:

‘Those who require new Aadhar cards must visit the website - www.uidai.gov.in and click the option - Order Aadhar Reprint (Pilot Basis)  and then register for the issue of new Aadhar cards. A service charge of Rs. 40 has to made online for this. Then, the new Aadhar card will be sent to the address given by SpeedPost. This system has been taken up on a test basis and if any problems are encountered, they will be solved later.`
