The importance of water harvesting

Posted on: 20/Jul/2019 5:23:38 PM
Rainwater is a renewable, sustainable and a high quality water source at and for your home.

We have been encountering acute water scarcity over the last few years. As one of the steps to overcome this problem, we should conserve or harvest the rainwater which is mixing with seawater without any use.

The practise of rainwater harvesting has been around for thousands of years and is currently growing in popularity throughout our communities.

In India, Tamil Nadu was the first state to make rainwater harvesting compulsory for every building to avoid groundwater depletion. This initiative gave excellent results within 5 years, and slowly every state took it as a role model.

Since its implementation, the Chennai Metro City, well-known for its water scarcity, had a 50% rise in water level in five years and water quality significantly improved.

Since rainwater is received directly through precipitation, it is often not considered suitable for drinking without treatment. This is mainly because it may contain some dissolved pollutants.

The benefits of rainwater harvesting:
  • Increases groundwater level
  • Reduces the chance of flooding, and soil erosion
  • Making use of a valuable resource that is FREE
  • Can be used for Non-drinking purposes
  • Can improve plant growth
  • Reduces water bills

Now that you have known even more on the importance of saving rainwater, why wait? Come on - please take action to store rainwater in your residence as well!
