An estimate states that by the year 2025, in India, there will be over 7 crore diabetics which is a really large count. This likely increase in total cases of diabetes is directly associated with diabetic retinopathy and draws the need for earlier intervention and overall diabetes duration so that we can prevent a number of visual impairment, says Banwarilal Purohit, the Governor.

Addressing the 9th Edition of RETICON which is an annual conference event conducted on exclusive surgeries made on retina, the governor says it is imperative for us to increase the total count of eye doctors. By 2020, the country is at the verge of seeing significant increase in blind population by up to 1.5 crore. Contrarily, the country has just 15,000 ophthalmologists (eye doctors) per lakh of people. He adds that the treatment methods should be precision based and we need to encourage faster treating method. One such move is robotic eye surgery that is getting popular among doctors. This is one of the contemporary surgical procedures.

The event also saw distribution of gold metal to the exclusive works by professor of Ophthalmology, Sunir J Garg from Thomas Jefferson University.
