A major announcement has been issued for highway users as the central government has amended the National Highways Toll Determination and Collection Rules, 2008. Under the new rules, motorists traveling without a FASTag—or with a non-functional FASTag will face higher toll charges.
According to the amendment, vehicles paying in cash at toll plazas without a FASTag will be required to pay twice the regular fee. However, those opting for digital payments such as UPI will be charged 1.25 times the regular fee, offering a clear advantage for digital transactions.
Example of the New Structure
Regular toll: ₹100
Without FASTag, paying in cash: ₹200
Without FASTag, paying digitally (UPI): ₹125
Authorities say the new rules aim to increase transparency, reduce cash usage, and promote digital payments, which in turn will help reduce long queues and ensure smoother travel at toll plazas.
FASTag, based on RFID technology, allows automatic toll deduction through scanners installed at toll booths, enabling vehicles to move without stopping.
Once the updated rules take effect, motorists without FASTag can still pay toll charges at the plaza, but cash payments will cost more, while digital payments will receive partial concession.
