The copious inflow of Krishna water in 2022 has led to the storage in the major reservoirs getting 90% full now. It is known that these reservoirs supply water to the Chennai residents. Now, the WRD or Water Resource Department has requested the Andhra Pradesh government to stop water supply to Chennai. The WRD officers hinted that the water discharge to the city would be suspended by this week.

The intense NE monsoons in chennai has led to the reservoirs in the city becoming full and due to that inflow was stepped down in September 2022. Information is that till jwo TN has received 3000 TMC cubic feet water from Krishna river ever since the discharge began in May.

It was brought out by a senior officer from WRD that as per the agreement 12 tmc to 15 tmc must be supplied to Chennai and due to healthy water storage a reduction in the water discharge was requested. According to another officer the current inflow is about 500 cusecs and it would be gradually reduced to 100 to 300 cusecs. In 2 to 3days, the inflow would be stopped totally.

The superb piece of information is that in this coming summer season there would not be any water shortage in Chennai city. It is learnt that the reservoirs have got a cumulative storage of 10 TMC as against 11 TMC of capacity. The AP state would be requested for water supply if there was water shortage in Chennai. The WRD would carry out maintenance of all canals once the water supply stops completely. It was confirmed by an officer from the Water Resources Department that works such as de-silting, lining and repair works etc would be carried out from the next week onwards.
