Walking in front of airport or Island Grounds etc, leisurely would soon become a reality for many residents of Chennai!!

Now, the TN Road Sector Project working under the State Highways Department has put forth a proposal to construct pedestrian plazas near airport and Island grounds in Chennai. This would be similar to the pedestrian plaza at T. Nagar. There would also be a pedestrian plaza constructed at Chromepet, a fast growing shopping hub in southern Chennai.

It was brought out by an officer belonging to TN Road Sector Project that the proposal to construct a pedestrian plaza in the above aid localities are in discussion now.

At the workshop on urban infra, urban transport roads and logistics in Chennai, model diagrams were shown. According to these model diagrams, the roads maintained by the Highways Dept in front of the airport,  Island Grounds and Chromepet etc would have separate and wider footpaths with seating arrangements plus ornamental plants etc. It is known that currently the pedestrian footpaths are very narrow and many pedestrians face issues due to high speed vehicles in these places.  The unregulated parking on the road at Chromepet has been making the situation worse.

As a preparatory meeting for the Viksit Bharat Abhiyan Project, the workshop was conducted. At this meeting many government officials from several government departments participated. According to an announcement made by the TN govt,  TN Road Sector Project is upgrading 8 arterial roads in Chennai for more than 138km into smart roads.

The GCC would be implementing the pedestrian plaza in localities like Nungambakkam and Washermenpet etc. The pedestrian plaza project in these 2 important localities in chennai is now in tendering stage and would come up at Khader Nawaz Road and in MC Road respectively. To make the road an open mall, GCC would be converting the entire stretch of MC Road as vehicle free road.
