Thanks to the state highways department for floating tenders to expand the stretch near Kottivakkam on the ECR for Rs 14.8 crore, the road widening works has been accelerated now on the portions of East Coast Road or ECR.
It must be taken into account that one km of road would be converted to 6 lane road as land acquisition is almost over now. The official data has confirmed that out of 84 private patta landowners from whom the TN govt has acquired the land for widening work project settlements have been issued for as many as64 individuals. From 6m to 9m in width now, the stretch would become 22m width and by this there would be easy movement of the vehicles.
Every day, nearly 33,900 vehicles use this important road and in the peak hours the traffic volume is 7400. There have been frequent accidents and traffic congestion issues here.
It is known that a larger ECR expansion project is being carried out between Thiruvanmiyur and Akkarai and at a cost of Rs 135 crores and this road widening work from 6m to 9m to 22m would be a part of this major expansion work. Currently, road widening work has been going on at Palavakkam and in another 5 months this activity would begin at Kottivakkam.
Later on, the road widening work would be extended to other places like Injambakkam, Neelankarai and Sholinganallur etc. In the future motorists would be able to cross the road in just 20minutes. Currently, it takes around 40minutes or more in the peak hours.
National Highway Authority of India or NHAI has been given the responsibility of road expansion work after Mahabalipuram. Work near Mugaiyur has commenced is known. Expanding the road is good but presence of speed breakers is crucial. This was as per some residents from ECR.
