Flood works in Chennai etc - Know about this latest GO from WRD!!

There are many highly flooded vulnerable places in Chennai and in Chengalpet. The news now is that the state govt has allotted Rs 184.22 crores according to the recommendations from Thiruppugazh Committee for carrying out flood works in Chennai and in Chengalpet. Government order or GO has been issued by WRD in this regard.

It is worth mentioning here that WRD has been planning to carry out 4 major works as well as 6 sub works. This was as per the government order. Information collected is that WRD would be providing emergency network of flood carrier channel between Otiyyambakkam channel and Madurambakkam drain to Pallikaranai swamp in Semmencherry and Perumbakkam area in Tambaram, Vandalur, Sholinganallur taluk of Chennai and Chengalpet districts. This would be the first major work from WRD. At a cost of Rs 96.5 crores, sub works would be carried out under the first major work. It is learnt that WRD would be providing an emergency network of flood carrier macro drains, construction of cut and cover macro drains etc.

Standardisation of Okkium Maduvu would be done as a part of second work. In this aspect, activities like dredging and regrading of existing drain till Buckingham Canal near KCG College of Technology premises in the Sholinganallur taluk in Chennai. An amount of Rs 5 crores would be spent on this work.  Macro drain cut and cover would be provided by the third major work for the missing link of Ottiyambakkam tank to Arasankalani tank and linking to Pallikaranai swamp in Tambaram taluk of Chengalpet district. This work would be done at a cost of RS 68.82 crores. Construction of cut and cover macro drains at 2 places would be carried out in the third major work.

Modernisation of link between Adambakkam Tank and Veerangal odai in Alandur tank would be the fourth major work that would be carried out by WRD. An amount of Rs 13.9 crores would be spent for this work.

In the NE monsoon season, the flood prone places have been affected badly in 2021. It is now revealed by WRD that the flood works scheduled would be finished before NE monsoons this year.

During the NE monsoon season, Chennai and its neighbouring places like Chengalpet, Kancheepuram  and Tiruvallur etc witnessed heavy rains. This resulted in floods and water logging in several localities in Chennai is well known to us. One of the most important locations in Chennai, T Nagar was flooded heavily and unplanned smart city works was cited as the main reason.
