In the future, if you come across arterial roads in Chennai becoming smart roads, then don’t get surprised!!

These upcoming smart roads would have facilities like safe walkways, traffic calming measures, facilities for cycling etc. The highways department is having plans to convert arterial roads in Chennai to smart roads.

Under the TN Road Sector project 2, GST Road, EVR Periyar Salai, JN Salai, Grand Northern Trunk Road, Velachery Bypass, Marmalong Bridge Irumbuliyur Road and Mount-Poonamallee Avadi Road of distance of 103km would be considered for developing smart roads in the phase-1. For preparing DPR, bids have been invited. According to an officer belonging to the department of Highways it was confirmed that the improvement works would develop existing roads as smart roads with traffic calming measures, safe walkways plus other facilities like safe intersections, cycling facilities, parking bays, on/off street parking, safe crossings , well planned underground utilities, SWD etc.

Seamless traffic flow would be given huge importance and for that a consultant would be appointed. He would be giving importance to NMT, multimodal integration plus others like decongestion, smart road safety measures etc. It is brought out that economically and environmentally resilient infrastructure would be created for achieving 20 year life span of roads, climate resilient utilities etc.

The superb piece of information is that fatalities due to accidents would be reduced and low carbon modes would be promoted plus there would also be de-incentivising private vehicles usage, and finally reducing idling time at the tragic signals and intersections etc.

Senior researcher of Citizen Consumer and Civic Action group or CAG, Sumana Narayan, spoke about how traffic calming measures would lead to speed reduction or controlled flow of traffic. Currently, widening of the roads is being given huge importance and not on reduction of speeds. By this, there would be safety for the pedestrians.
