Enhancing the storage capacity of Poondi reservoir - Details?

Posted on: 22/Jan/2022 9:26:41 AM
Next week, the WRD or water resources department would submit a proposal for enhancing the storage capacity of the Poondi reservoir. The proposal would also include building a new reservoir at Ramanjeri that is 11km upstream. Information is that this would help to harness surplus water from monsoon rains. In the year 1944, the Poondi reservoir in Tiruvallur district was built across Kosasthalaiyar River and is maintained by the WRD.

It must be noted that in the monsoon the reservoir received more inflow than its capacity of 3.2thousand mcft and the excess water is released into Kosasthalaiyar River. It is now said that the TN government has planned to increase the storage capacity of Poondi reservoir to 5 tmcft.

It was later pointed out by a senior officer belonging to WRD that Poondi was a major reservoir that caters to the Chennai drinking water needs. To make the water available to the public in the summer season, WRD has proposed increasing the storage capacity and constructing more check dams in non ayacut land. The officer later spoke about how the height of the dam and bund would be raised.

The amount of Rs 6 crores approximately that was proposed for the project is ready and to initiate works separate wings must be formed.
