If you have crossed Adyar estuary, then you would have noticed Tholkappia Poonga there in 58 acres of land. The news that has emerged is that this poonga would be renovated or re-developed by CRRT or Chennai River Restoration Trust. It is learnt that the TN government had decided to study the ecological park and prepare DPR by appointing experts through TNUIFSL or Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial services Ltd.

It was mentioned by a document belonging to TNUIFSL that the main aim behind the study is the redevelopment of Tholkappia Poonga for its sustenance and to enable the citizens to study its nature, understand and enjoy it in the urban wetland category. The study would also help to promote sustainable use of biodiversity resources in general and plant species in particular. The redevelopment plan for this poonga would be for a period of 10 years.

Truth is that infrastructure created in 2011 could be reassessed for the sake of improvements. These include augmentation of nursery activities, improvement of spillway, compound wall repairs etc. It is brought out that there might be possibilities of erecting watchtowers in Tholgapia poonga in the future. By this, the poonga would be made a robust center in the field of urban wetland ecosystems.

Information gathered is that the study would also include creating a unique urban park having amazing natural sceneries, scientific/practical education and training, safe walkways etc. various sites, facilities plus other recreational options would be provided for the visitors of this park.
