From February 2021 onwards after the completion of phase-2 road works between Nemilichery and Minjur, ORR was opened for public use. Point is that many motorists have been using the stretch on the Vandalur- Minjur in Chennai without paying any toll amount while using this stretch. The reason for that was due to the want of approval from the state government.

It seems that these motorists would not be able to travel in this stretch free of cost in the future. It is now said that the motorists would have to pay for traveling on the Chennai Outer Ring road or ORR. The TNRDC or Tamil Nadu is thinking of appointing a service agency for toll collection at 4 toll booths on the Vandalur- Minjur stretch.

According to a senior officer belonging to TNRDC it was clear that a tender for appointing a service agency to collect toll amount at 4 toll plazas in ORR was invited. The TN governments final approval is expected anytime now. He later mentioned that the department had received notification on toll collection. It is learnt that the preparatory works regarding toll collection have started now and approval from the government is expected.

It is important to mention that 4 toll gates have been set up at Varadharajapuram 6km near Mudichur,  at Kolappancheri 21.8 km near Nazarathpet, at Palavedu 30.85km near Nemilichery and at Chinnamullaivoyal 56.7km village located 4km from Minjur. In 2 phases, the CORR project was implemented. Vandalur to Nemilichery is phase-1 constructed at a length of 29.65kms and amount of Rs 1081 crores was spent. This was opened for public use from 2014 onwards is known. In the month of February 2021, a 30.5km phase-2 from Nemilichery to Minjur was constructed at a cost of Rs 1075 crores was inaugurated and grabbed many eyeballs.
