Over the last 2 decades, the traffic volume, especially container traffic has increased many times in north Chennai!!

Truth is that the movement of containers to the port has been responsible for heavy traffic congestion in north Chennai. On Tuesday, the TN government had urged Centre to construct a 7.6lm long sea bridge connecting Zero gate or gate no 1 of Chennai port with Manali Road Tiruvottriyur junction. The objective behind this was to reduce the traffic congestion here.

It was mentioned by some sources that NHAI has been asked to prepare the feasibility study report for this sea bridge project. It is learnt that the project might have a suspension superstructure for the movement of fishing vessels to the harbour at Kasimedu.

In New Delhi on Tuesday, a request was submitted by the minister for highways Mr. E. Velu to the Union minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari.  Information is that the movement of vehicles and parking has become unmanageable for the road users due to the increase in the traffic volume especially the container traffic. This was according to some sources. It must be noted that under the Ennore Manali Road Improvement project Ennore Expressway from the gate no 1 or zero gate of Chennai port has been developed into a 4-lane highway by NHAI. There are service roads on both sides. User fee is collected by the agency is known. The state government now wants a permanent solution for the traffic congestion/accidents, and also smooth movement of the container trucks.
