Vegetable prices have shot up enormously now in Chennai

On Monday, all vegetable retail shops at Koyambedu wholesale market were opened and this resulted in the vegetable prices going up by 15percent. Until the end of the lockdown, the traders were worried about the sales going down but now they were very happy as their business had picked up.

In the last week, there were just 50% sales of vegetables in the market and this was as per Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Association. He added that on Monday the sales went up by 75% and that was due to the opening of all retail shops after a period of 2 weeks.

It is learnt that this market at Koyambedu received more than 3000 small vehicles yesterday. In normal circumstances, the number would be around 2000 only. The vendors came in huge numbers yesterday to this market to buy vegetables. On Monday, the prices of veggies have increased by 15%. Truth is that the prices of vegetables would keep fluctuating for another week or for two weeks. The vegetable prices went up in the Koyambedu market but the prices of onions, tomatoes and potatoes did not go up. These were sold for Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg.

Yesterday, beans were sold for Rs 50 to Rs 80 per kg, broad beans for Rs 40 per kg, brinjal for Rs 35 per kg and beetroot/carrot for Rs 30 per kg. Only those vendors with tokens were allowed inside the market yesterday. The vendors wore face masks and maintained social distancing in the market.

It must be noted that the fruit prices remained the same in the last 2 weeks. This has caused the vendors to suffer a huge loss. It was later brought out by Mr. Dhanasekar, secretary, Koyambedu Vegetable Fruit and Flower Merchants Association that the business would become normal again after the lockdown. While the prices of other fruits have reduced, apples were sold for Rs 240 per kg. Fruits like pomegranate, sweet lime, grapes, oranges etc were sold for Rs 150 per kg, Rs 120 to Rs 130 per kg, Rs 50 per kg, Rs 130 per kg respectively.
