How to travel from Chennai to Kodaikanal?

It feels breezy and nice to spell the word by itself Kodaikanal! It is a sought-after tourist hill town in south India.  It lies within the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. As it is located at an altitude of 2000 meters, it feels chill and calm. There are evergreen forest areas and the star-shaped kodaikanal lake is very popular here. One can hire rowing boats and get hikers and cyclists to enjoy the road path here.

The total distance between Chennai and Kodaikanal is 514km.

So, the big question is how to travel from Chennai to seamlessly reach the hill town? From Chennai, there are totally 9 trains to Kodaikanal. This includes

  • The shortest and quickest way to reach Kodaikanal from Chennai is to board a flight till Madurai. And from there, you can get Tirukural Expreess for reaching Kodaikanal.
  • When you want the cheapest mode of transport from Chennai to Kodaikanal, you may choose Ms Tn Link Express to travel to Dindugal and from there, you can take Navyug express to travel between Dindugal and Kodaikanal

It is to be noted that there is no direct train connecting Chennai and Kodaikanal. The nearest railway station to Kodaikanal is Kodai Road.

Total distance : 80km

Get a cab booked for a price range of Rs 2000. There are also regular bus facilities available from here starting from as early as 6.30 am. This may cost you about Rs 100 per head.

Note that not all trains hailing from Chennai will reach at Kodai Road. For example, trains like Pandiyan Express do not halt at Kodai Road.

Traveling by air?  

Yet again, there is no direct airway connectivity between Chennai and Kodaikanal. You need to reach Madurai and shift to train journey to reach Kodaikanal.
