For measuring wind power generation real time, Tangedco opts for GPS

Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation or Tangedco established in the year 2010 is an electric power generation and distribution public sector undertaking. The latest news is Tangedco has been using GPS to measure wind power generation real time in the last few months of time.

The point is GPS has been installed in all the windmills in the state of TN and Tangedco has been able to measure the power generation without going to the spot. This generation is being recorded by an assessor with the help of equipment till now. It must be noted that there were several gaps in the measurement and this has resulted in losses for the discom.

Smart meters in all high tension consumers have been set up by Tangedco and this has prevented assessors from visiting the consumer after recording the consumption. It was pointed out by an official of Tangedco that after installing GPS in all the windmills their company gets bill from the wind power companies for selling wind power within 5 days of a new month. Earlier there was a delay of over a month is known. He later expressed his happiness regarding the transparency as the bill was digital and no assessor has been involved.

The amazing piece of news is the state of Tamil Nadu was the first to install GPS in the windmills. It is now said that other states such as Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra could opt for GPS in the windmills in the near future.

According to the official belonging to Tangedco, the wind power capacity of TN is 8322 MW. By this new billing scheme, it would be easier to know the wind power generation in a real time. For power schedule, forecast has been used till now but with GPS wind power generation real time would be known.

Another important advantage of this GPS is it is now possible to know how many windmills are actually generating power in the wind season. The point to be noted is many windmills were old and were not generating power at all. Malpractices in the billing process would not be there as in the coming months as GPS would be installed in solar, biomass and also in thermal plants. By this there would be reduction in the expenditure for the discom. The information collected is the discom has changed all digital meters with smart meters for high tension consumers like factories, IT offices etc.
