Now that the class-12 state board exams are wrapped up, students and parents are jumping on their focus towards NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) plus JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) training.

Starting from Monday, special coaching classes for such national-level competitive exams are set to get resumed. Coming on to the private coaching centres, the last phase of such competitive exam coaching are taking place. In fact, a few of these private centres have started conducting mock tests.

Across Tamil Nadu, there are 413 such government coaching centres where over 2000 students study. Out of this, 4000 of them are transformed into residential centres.

It is to be noted that last year, there were 9000 registrations received from students for these special training classes across 412 centres. Out of the total registered students, 1,300 of them have got NEET cleared.

For intensifying training compared to last year, exclusive training is given to 320 higher secondary teachers at leading private institutions. And these 320 teachers in turn trained about 4,130 teachers in Tamil Nadu.

There is a 17 percent increase in overall number of students appearing for NEET exam this year. The exam scheduled for May 5 will have 1.4 lakh plus students taking up NEET exam this year. And it will be the final batch of students to take up this competitive exam upon clearing the outdated syllabus. TN government has substantially changed the syllabus to prepare students for these exams.

NEET Exam centres

To cut out the need for traveling to other states for taking up NEET exam, the total number of NEET Exam centres is increased. In 2018, there were 218 centres and this is increased to 520 in 2019, explains K.A.Sengottaiyan, the minister of school education.

According to guidelines from the centre, changes in infrastructure are made in the exam centres. In 2018, a total of 1.17 lakh students took up NEET. This year, the state can even accommodate 1.5 lakh NEET candidates.

There were not enough number of centres to accommodate students, and hence they had to travel out of state. In fact, some students looked for temporary stay location in Kerala and Rajasthan.
