Various members of NGOs representing differently able persons highlighted several issues at the Kilambakkam bus terminus in south Chennai. Now, CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority would be taking some remedial steps.
It must be recalled that on 15th of September 2023 members of 5 NGOs including DRA and TARATDAC etc took part in an access audit visit to the bus terminus. This caught the attention of many.
According to a senior official belonging to CMDA, an audit report along with representations from DRA and TARATDAC were received for various steps to be taken for 100% access compliant for the persons with disabilities and senior citizens. Based on the representations, CMDA member secretary Mr. Anshul Mishra made his presence felt at the Kilambakkam bus terminus and directed the officials to carry out rectifications.
A new ramp (in addition to the 2 ramps that have been provided as per the guideline at the side of the terminal building for entry and exit) would be constructed by CMDA and it would be in the front portion of the terminal.
It must be taken into account that the new bus terminus at Kilambakkam (that was constructed as per harmonised access guidelines for differently able persons etc) would have a toll free helpline with video call facility for senior citizens and for those with cognitive issues. It was brought out by a senior officer from CMDA that some changes in the amenities would be carried out in the toilets that have been designed according to the guidelines.
