Buckingham canal rejuvenation project has been pending for many years now and it is a major flood mitigation measure.

The news now is that there might be floods in Chennai in this monsoon if implementation of this flood mitigation project was not carried out. In the year 2015, Chennai experienced the worst floods and lives of the many residents were turned upside down. The Buckingham canal rejuvenation project was first announced after the floods in 2015. This project aimed at the removal of encroachments plus de-silting waterways and garbage dumping prevention etc.

Now even after 7 years, the PWD has not even conducted a survey of encroachments. Delay of another project announced by the Union government was responsible for the PWD not conducting a survey of encroachments. This project from the union government was an inland waterways project and it involved starting a ferry service on the waterway.

The Chennai city would continue to suffer from floods unless the Buckingham canal is widened and de-silted. This was brought out by the interim report of the Thiruppugazh Committee. It is known that this committee was formed to devise a long term flood mitigation plan for Chennai.

Both PWD and WRD haven`t implemented the measures. Chief engineer Mr. Muralidharan explained that an amount of Rs 2 crores has been allotted for de-silting the canal and removing water hyacinth.

Mr. S. Rajendran, chief engineer of GCC was of the view that restoration of Buckingham canal was very important and even if crores of money was spent on Cooum, Adyar and Kosasthalaiyar Chennai would continue to get flooded.
