A week has gone since the metro line`s new stretch was opened and metro train fares were also reduced. Now, the metro rail ridership has gone up from 55000 to nearly 85000 passengers per day.

It must be recalled that a few months back the metro ridership had touched 50000 and it went to 55000 a few weeks back. It was mentioned by some officials belonging to CMRL that after the phase-1 extension project from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar was opened last Sunday the average daily number of passengers rose to 74000. After many complaints from the commuters, the metro train fares were reduced from Rs 70 to Rs 50 and discounts for those who have bought smartcards or QR code tickets have increased the metro rail patronage. Truth is that in the last 2 days after the reduction of fares nearly 86000 passengers per day used the metro trains in Chennai. The metro train ridership is expected to touch 1 lakh per day soon.

One of the important metro stations in Chennai is Chennai Central metro station and this station has been witnessing nearly 7000 passengers per day and is followed by the airport station with 4500 passengers per day. It was revealed that in the phase-1 extension stretch Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar metro stations both have nearly 2000 passengers per day that was higher than expected. Many college students and office goers travel from northern parts to central parts of Chennai. The passenger traffic is high in the Koyambedu metro station and this station is being used by nearly 3000 passengers in a day.

The officials were of the view that the last mile connectivity (share autos etc) that is currently present in certain metro stations would have to be expanded to all the metro stations. The last mile connectivity must be provided from airport to Chromepet, Pallavaram etc.
