Hunar Haat to be held at the popular Island Grounds in Chennai, residents excited

Chennai residents would not have forgotten the open air exhibitions that were held at the famous Island Grounds in the past.

Next month, Island Grounds in Chennai would be hosting the Union affair minority ministrys Hunar Haat. By this event, this famous place would come alive. For nearly a year, the 29 acre property near the highly popular Marina Beach has been inactive. This has been due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

In normal circumstances, an annual trade fair would have been held in the island Grounds in Chennai is well known. The department of tourism now wants to make use of this huge space for this upcoming event Hunar Haat as things have been returning back to normal now. It must be noted that Hunar Haat is an initiative to generate employment to the master artisans and craftspeople. By this initiative, the craftsmen and artisans would be able to showcase their skills.

As per an officer belonging to the TN tourism department, the Hunar Haat would take place in the second week of February. Throughout 2020, Island Grounds did not host any event except the mandatory annual firecrackers fair that was organised on the eve of deepavali in November month.

Revenue generation:
Generation of revenue is important and steps have been taken for generating this revenue from the spacious area by allowing mega events there. By following the prescribed Covid-19 norms, it would be possible to organise events. This was pointed out by an official.

To attract the tourists, the facility has been used to organise events depending on the season. It must be recalled that in the month of September 2019 the TN state government had organised Madrasapattinam Virundhu (3 day food festival offering varieties of cuisines) from the hinterland of the state. Island Grounds in Chennai has always been an asset in hosting tourism events and it could help in a big manner in this current tough situation. This was said by Mr. N. Ravi, former officer of TNTDC. He added that about 20,000 people could assemble at the Island Grounds at any given time by following Covid-19 protocols.
