The central government is earnestly thinking on a proposal to permit the small shops, hotels/restaurants, etc., to provide Wi-Fi Services on a retail sales basis.

An official from the government telecommunication circles shared:

‘In the earlier days, we had the facility of public telephone booths for making t5elephone calls. Now, the central government is thinking on similar lines for providing retail service for ‘Wi-Fi’ connection.

Sometime earlier, TRAT (Telecom Regulatory Authority if India) had already proposed this Wi-Fi service under the name, ‘Public Data Office’ as a commercial model. However, the telecommunication service providing companies protested strongly against this. Still, the central government has a strong conviction that providing this retail-based Wi-Fi services, it will be a right step taken in the objective of realising a completely ‘Digitalised India’!

Regarding the objections raised by the telecommunication service providers, The Chief of TRAI R. S. Sharma observed: ‘It is a wrong thought process to assume that new competitors in the field of telecommunication service providers will come up. They have somehow overlooked that their existing fixed customers with internet connectivity will change over as retail customers. This retail Wi-Fi’ facility will be implemented shortly!’
