Edible root vegetable belonging to the family ‘Brassicaceae’, radish are consumed all around the world is known. The point is parts of radish plant such as flowers, leaves, seeds, pods etc are consumed. The scientific name for raddish is ‘Raphanus Sativus’. Radish is called as Mullangi in Tamil. It is important to mention that radish have got sharp flavour and this is due to various chemical compounds produced by the plants like glucosinolate, myrosinase etc. In India, radish is commonly known as mooli. There are several ingredients present in radish and they are fat, carbohydrate, protein, fibre, sugar, minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, vitamin C, A, K etc.

Intake of radish could provide these health benefits.

Good for weight loss:

The fibre content present in radish would make us feel full and by this we would avoid over eating. Weight loss takes place. Bowel movements are managed, issues like constipation are avoided.

Immunity gets boosted:

Radish contains vitamin C and they protect the body from free radicals and prevent cell damage caused by the toxins present in the environment. Production of collagen is carried out by vitamin C. By this healthy skin and blood vessels are maintained.   

Good for heart health:

Here the presence of anthocyanins in radish does superbly. The anti-inflammatory property of anthocyanins lowers the risk of getting cardiovascular diseases in us. The major cause of stroke is due to bad cholesterol or LDL. Intake of radish lowers this LDL effectively.

Diabetes is controlled:

Our blood sugar levels would not get affected by consuming radish having low glycemic index. It is said that intake of radish juice has got positive effect on the blood glucose levels in those having diabetes issue.

BP gets controlled:

Intake of radish lowers our BP or blood pressure effectively. The potassium present in the radish plays an important role here.
