On the government lands, the major portion of Chennai Metro phase-2 would be constructed. By this fewer residents would be affected. It is revealed that the entire phase-2 metro train project is estimated to cost mammoth amount of Rs 69.180 crores. Under phase-2 metro project there would be as many as 128 stations of 119 km. For this purpose 120.98 hectares of land would be needed. This was confirmed by the officials belonging to CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Ltd.

The important information is out of those 120.98 hectares of land Chennai Metro would require 27.19 hectares of private land and the rest 93.79 hectares would be of government lands.

As per an official of CMRL it is clear that the department had taken conscious decision of using government land primarily. This would benefit the people as minimum number of people only would be affected. He added that for phase-2 their department would acquire only lands that are absolutely essential.

In the phase-1 the size of the stations was 220 metres but in the phase-2 the sizes were brought down to 150 metres. This has been also confirmed by the official. It is important to note that Chennai metro would need as many as 1309 properties and out of that 104 are residential and the rest 937 are commercial. The families and the land owners would be adequately compensated for this.

The important point is the compensation for land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation would be carried out under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. Lands would not only be used to build stations and other buildings but also for building of depots at various places like Madhavaram, SIPCOT , Poonamallee for maintaining trains and for other related activities.

It is now brought out that the Madhavaram depot would be constructed over 27.8 hectares of land and SIPCOT depot would be constructed on an area of 4.5 hectares. The official pointed out that in Poonamallee the depot would be built over 15.4 hectares of land. Notices regarding land acquisition have been sent to many residents and shop owners already.
