Why Engineers day is celebrated on September 15 in India?

September 15 marks the birth date and month of a legendary Civil Engineer, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. The Bharat Ratna awardee was born on September 15, 1861 in a small village called Muddenahalli in Karnataka. His contributions to the development of engineering phase in India was celebrated as Engineer’s day on his birthday every year.
Initially Visvesvaraya completed his studied Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Madras and then pursued engineering at the College of Science in Pune. He served as a Diwan of Mysore and awarded the prestigious ‘Knight’ position in 1915 as a commander of British Indian empire lead by King George V.
Visvesvaraya received the Bharat Ratna in the year 1955. He became the member of the London Institution of Civil Engineers. Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore awarded him a fellowship honoring his works and contributions. Visvesvaraya installed the irrigation system at the Khadakvasla reservoir in Pune with water flood gated for optimal storage of increased water levels. Gwalior’s Tigra Dam and Mysuru’s Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam installed the same irrigation system for the storage.
Engineer’s day varies across the world and the memorial day of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is purely dedicated for Indians celebrating the technological advancements in the field of civil engineering. Visvesvaraya’s memorial stands at Muddenahalli managed by the Visvesvaraya National Memorial Trust.
