Posted on: 23/May/2023 9:12:33 AM
As the gig or contract workers went on a  strike on Monday demanding  better salary and working conditions etc, the delivery of food and groceries through online apps was affected in some parts of Chennai.

General secretary of food delivery employees wing of CITU,Mr. Ramakrishna spoke about how for more than 8 years the workers received around Rs 5 for every kilometre they travelled to deliver the foods etc in Chennai. He added that in addition to this the online apps swiggy ahd reduced the incentives and other travel allowances etc. It must be taken into account that the apps were submitting false information about the distance between the hotels and the delivery points etc. Inspite of many complaints form the gig workers, no action was taken till now.

On Monday, more than 85% of the registered delivery partners did not go to work. The protests would continue till swiggy addresses their issues. Some gig workers who worked on Monday faced issues with vehicular movement due to protests from a political party. As a result, the workers declined the food orders and this resulted in the delay in the delivery of foods( by 45 min to 60 minutes) to the residents.

It was mentioned by a Porur based resident that despite paying the surge fee, there was a delay in the food delivery. After 12noon, few restaurants went offline due to repeated queries over the delays. In the end, Swiggy mentioned that their services would be normalised soon.
