In a few more years, the Chennai Beach - Velachery - St Thomas Mount MRTS stretch would become a metro like route with tremendous facilities. Sounds incredible right!!

It is now brought out that when this happens then the passengers would be able to walk on a well lit road, would be able to do shopping at an outlet and eat at a restaurant before boarding the trains. In a week`s time, CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority would be appointing a consultant to study how stations would be developed.

The experts have mentioned that the work is on way to operate air-conditioned trains on the Beach-Tambaram route as the railways is taking time to improve MRTS and suburban network.

The state govt must take over all the rail related transit in Chennai and 2 of the 18 MRTS stations would be taken for study regarding the introduction of the facilities. The study would be completed in a few months and this was as per an officer belonging to CUMTA. To understand the real estate potential in and around the railway stations in Chennai, a transaction advisor would be appointed.

It must be noted that the people would start living closer to the railway stations as the affordability would become more. To improve the stations, CMDA and railways would enter into a MoU. In the first phase, after developing the stations and surrounding areas, the state govt would be taking over the line. While the actual capacity is around 6lakhs, the daily ridership now in MRTS is just one lakhs.

It is now mentioned that this move would be a part of the TN state govt plan of integrating MRTS and suburban railway system in the city by working with the railways dept. After the completion of a new line between Beach and Egmore, the railways is working to hand over the MRTS line.
